Search "Zion packing list" and you get the same forty items on every page, regardless of whether you're wading the Narrows in April or climbing exposed switchbacks in July. Those two trips have almost nothing in common, and a list that covers both covers neither.
ZionGearBuilder.com was built to answer a narrower, more useful question: given your route, your month and your group, what do you actually need to bring? The Gear Builder asks six questions and sorts the answer into what's essential, what's worth having, and what's just nice — along with the permit rules and conditions that change the answer.
Every route in the tool is driven by the specific conditions of that hike: water temperature and river flow in the Narrows, exposure and traction on Angels Landing, heat and shade on desert day hikes, elevation and cold at night in the backcountry. Guidance comes from National Park Service advisories, the flow and closure thresholds the park publishes, and what Springdale outfitters actually equip people with.
Where the honest answer is "rent it" or "you don't need that," the site says so. That costs us commission and keeps the recommendation worth reading.
We're not the National Park Service and we're not affiliated with them. We can't issue permits, and we can't tell you whether conditions are safe on the day you go. Always check current NPS alerts and forecasts — conditions in Zion change fast, and a flash flood or a closed Narrows doesn't care what any website said last week.
